VCP Invitational Rugby Tournament 2015
St.Michael's U11 rugby team played in the VCP invitational tournament on college field this weekend. Five teams participated, involving two Bedford touring sides, the Old Albanians, VCP and St.Michael's.
Having beaten VCP in the weeks prior to the tournament, St.Michael's were confident, well-prepared and looking forward to morning's fixtures. Unfortunately, a well organised and powerful Bedford side quickly put the boys onto the back foot. Their dominant pack and some direct running saw St.Michael's concede a try in the opening minutes of their first game. From this point onwards, a long hard morning lay ahead. The boys fought back in patches, generally rucking hard and competing at the breakdown. St.Michael's fixture against the Old Albanians was the highlight of their morning with hard running and solid defence. Sadly, missed tackles in their remaining games made the task at hand even tougher and consecutive defeats against Bedford 'B' and VCP followed.
As coach Doc Snook summarised, 'the boys played well in places but more-so as individuals. Unfortunately, our tackling let us down in places today'.
Tough fixtures like today provides invaluable experience for the future. This is especially true for the younger members of the squad who will undoubtedly lead the way next season.
