St Michael’s is a school that is constantly striving to raise awareness and support the charitable endeavour of the wider Jersey community. Our parents, pupils and staff rally together to support local events, charities and individuals. The charity Healing Waves is one such organization with an undeniable impact on local people.

This morning, staff and students were treated to a fantastic presentation by Max, the Chairman of the charity, during our assembly introduced all of us to the work he does and why it’s so important. The charity was first established when a group of surfers and support workers noticed a common theme. They all knew service users and disabled islanders who wanted to catch their first wave but didn’t know how to do so. With no adaptable water sports equipment already available to these service users, this team got together to help make sure they could finally experience the ocean.

Using accessible equipment and tailor-made sessions with experienced tutors Healing Waves offers Ocean Therapy sessions to islanders. As well as this the charity has also developed two specially adapted surfboards that mean anyone can now try their hand at surfing, no matter their ability. Healing Waves can help any individual with a condition and/or disability experience the healing powers of the ocean. Thus, leaving each individual feeling empowered, relaxed and more confident in their abilities.

At St Michael’s we couldn’t ignore the hard work that this charity was doing and so we set about thinking of a way we could help. That’s why Healing Waves will be one of the three named charities who will benefit from this year’s Christmas Sale on the 29th of November. As well as this, our Shell Year Pupils will work with Healing Waves as part of their work towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Overall, St Michael’s fundraising efforts will be focused on helping the charity by purchasing boards, wet suits and other equipment so they can continue to support islanders with disabilities.

We think this is a fantastic charity and hope that we can help, through our fundraising efforts, to support such a great cause!
